The Steering Committee is seeking feedback on the draft management plan until January 31, 2024. This will be a chance for local community members to review the draft plan. The Steering Committee recently held community meetings in Beaver Creek, Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay, and will be holding a meeting in Whitehorse on January 15, 2024 (3-7pm at the Yukon Inn) and in Haines Junction on January 16, 2024 (3-7pm at the Convention Centre) .  Comments gathered at these meetings and received via email will be considered by the Steering Committee while they develop the final management plan.

There are 41 proposed recommended actions in the draft management plan.
The Steering committee would like to hear from you.
1. Do the recommended actions support what you think should be done for the area?
2. Are there are any actions or concerns that were missed and should be brought into the management plan for the area?
3. Do you have any additional feedback for the Steering Committee?

Please send your feedback to [email protected] by January 31, 2024.
All are welcome to participate.

The Steering Committee is using the following steps to develop the Management Plan:

  1. Gather information - including traditional, local and scientific knowledge. This began in February 2011 and has continued to the present time.
  2. Conduct research - Field studies took place during the summer of 2011; These studies included fish inventory work, small mammal inventory, and plant inventory for both native and invasive species.
  3. Identify issues – Community workshops and meetings  identified management issues.
  4. Prepare draft plan – Steering Committee members reviewed the information gathered, developed recommendations, and identified the work needed to carry out those recommendations. The Steering Committee is currently receiving community feedback on the draft plan.
  5. Prepare final plan - The Steering Committee will meet again after January 31 2024 to review community feedback on the draft management plan and to develop a summary of this feedback. They will consider all comments, submissions and meeting notes in finalizing the recommended management plan for the Pickhandle Lakes Habitat Protection Area.
